Tvm Div commissions advanced EI system at Kumbalam

Alappuzha: Thiruvananthapuram Division has successfully commissioned advanced Electronic Interlocking (EI) system at Kumbalam Railway Station in the Ernakulam-Alappuzha section today, marking a significant step towards improving railway safety and operational efficiency. This upgrade replaces the older relay-based mechanical signaling system, ensuring better reliability, flexibility, and safer train operations.

Interlocking systems are crucial for railway operations as they prevent improper sequencing of signals and conflicting train movements. With this automation, rail operations will become more efficient and reliable.

Key Features of the Upgrade:

  • Centralized Electronic Interlocking (EI) system with hot standby arrangements.
  • Mechanical points replaced with electrically operated points and track circuiting for the hot axle siding.
  • All old signaling & telecommunication (S&T) assets replaced with modern equipment.
  • Electrically Operated Lifting Barrier (EOLB) installed at level crossings, replacing manual lifting barriers.
  • Implementation of RDSO-standardized circuits for enhanced safety.
  • Installation of new IPS, datalogger, ELD, and AFDAS systems for improved monitoring.

The new system was commissioned at 15:45 hrs on 26.02.25, with the first train, 13351 Dhanbad-Alappuzha Express, passing through at 16:05 hrs, followed by 22640 Alappuzha-Chennai Express at 16:26 hrs.

Attending the commissioning drill, Dr. Manish Thaplyal, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Thiruvananthapuram, reaffirmed the division’s commitment to modernizing railway infrastructure. The DRM also commended the coordinated efforts of all the departments, ensuring the project’s smooth execution without major train service disruptions.

The newly installed Electronic Interlocking system will ensure safe, reliable and more precise train movements. This modernization effort is a part of Southern Railway’s broader vision to enhance safety and efficiency, reinforcing its commitment to delivering seamless, technology-driven railway services for passengers and freight operators.
