Trivandrum: Seven railway stations in Southern Railway including Nagercoil, Thiruvananthapuram and Mangaluru Jn are now equipped with ‘Extended service counters’ placed near General Second Class(GS)/Unreserved coaches in Platforms to facilitate service of economy meals, snacks/combo meals and affordable packaged drinking water to the passengers of GS coaches.
The meals will be supplied from the kitchen units such as Refreshment Rooms (RRs) & Jan Ahaars( JAs) of IRCTC. Extended Service Counters have been made functional in order to improve the quality of services as well as to ensure the availability of adequate facilities of affordable and economy meals to the passengers travelling in GS coaches (unreserved) which are positions at either ends of the train. The scheme would be implemented by IRCTC on an experimental basis for a period of six months.

With regard to drinking water, glasses of 200 ml packaged drinking water will be sold. Efforts are being made to source 200 ml packaged drinking water at stations wherever feasible and till such time, 1 Ltr bottle of packaged drinking water is available. Extended service counters will be progressively implemented at many other stations facilitating the availability of economy meals and drinking water.
