Kottayam railway station gets new booking office & escalators

Kottayam: The newly constructed booking office and escalators at the second entry of Kottayam Railway Station were inaugurated on November 12, 2024 by the Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, Shri George Kurian in the presence of elected representatives, officials and public.

The new second entry building, featuring a spacious concourse, booking office, bi-directional escalators, and other passenger amenities, is part of the development project for Kottayam Railway Station, sanctioned at an estimated cost of ₹20.08 crores. Under this project, the main entry has been enhanced with multilevel two-wheeler parking, tactile paving, an improved façade, and other modern facilities. Additional infrastructure improvements include the installation of two passenger lifts, platform enhancements, and expanded circulating areas.

According to a press release from the railways, the project effectively addresses passenger requirements, with Kottayam Railway Station handling a daily average footfall of 25,231 passengers. The station serves as a key rail hub with 89 daily train stops, including 77 express services, catering to commuters, long-distance travellers, and pilgrims, particularly during the Sabarimala season.

During the event, Dr. Manish Thaplyal, Divisional Railway Manager, Thiruvananthapuram Division, highlighted the commitment to enhancing passenger experience at railway stations in the division.

Following the unveiling of a digital plaque, the newly constructed booking counter and escalators were officially opened for public use, welcomed by a large gathering at the second entry concourse.
