Trivandrum: Union Minister of State for Railways, Shri Rajen Gohain will initiate various infrastructure and amenities of Kerala and Tamil Nadu falling in the Railway divisions of Madurai and Trivandrum Divisions at a function to be held at Nagercoil Jn Railway Station on January 23, 2018.
He will lay the foundation stone for the doubling of Tracks of Thiruvananthapuram and Madurai Divisions and dedicate various Passenger Amenities of Nagercoil Jn station. The Projects and Passenger Amenities that are to be Dedicated / Inaugurated during the function at Nagercoil Jn Railway Station:
1. Laying of foundation stone for the doubling of tracks with electrification of:
Madurai – Vanchi Maniyachchi – Tuticorin section
Vanchi Maniyachchi – Tirunelveli – Nagercoil section
Kanniyakumari – Nagercoil – Thiruvananthapuram section
2. Inauguration of Escalator on Platform No.2/3 at Nagercoil jn
3. Dedication of 100% LED Lighting at Nagercoil Jn and
4. Dedication of WI-FI services at Nagercoil Jn Railway Station
The doubling with electrification of this section will increase passenger and freight traffic benefitting people of Kerala and Tamil Nadu state. Doubling of the section will increase the speed of trains due to avoidance of crossing and also facilitate the introduction of more trains in the section.
a) Kanniyakumari – nagercoil – thiruvananthapuram section
Doubling with electrification of 86.56 km, is estimated at a cost of Rs 1431.90 crores. The land acquisition for the project is 42 hector (17 hector in Kerala, 25 hector in Tamil Nadu). There are 15 stations, 394 bridges, 35 level crossings and 5 tunnels in the stretch.
