Weekend summer special heritage steam voyage in Nilgiri Mountain Railway

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a popular tourist attraction for tourists travelling from Mettupalayam to Coonoor and Ooty.  This unique Meter Gauge section which has been conferred with Heritage status by UNESCO runs on ‘Rack and Pinion System’ through the virgin hills of Western Ghats.  The 28 kms stretch between Mettupalayam – Coonoor covered on the heritage steam train gives the tourists a lifetime experience and rekindles the romance of train journeys.

Heritage Steam ‘Nilgiri Summer Special Trains’ will be run between Mettupalayam – Coonoor from 31.03.2018 to 24.06.2018 to the following timings.

Three special coaches have been refurbished for the “Heritage Steam voyage” NMR Summer special trains.  Two first-class coaches were refurbished at Golden Rock Workshop, Tiruchchirappalli and one SLR (Luggage cum Brake Van) coach at Mettupalayam Depot.   The steam locos for this summer special is pooled from Coonoor Loco Shed, which has four steam locos in service.

These coaches are equipped with special features such as anti-corrosive metallic spray paintings, vinyl wrapping and Seats furnished with sofa cloth upholstery.  Each of the two coaches has 16 seats of first class and 36 seats second class seats   These two wooden type coaches are of coupe type named as Badaga and Thoda.  The partially wooden type coach named as Irula has 28 seats with double seat type.
